German-born American classical philologist and historian of science and medicine

Heinrich von Staden (born ) is a South African historian and classical scholar who has written several books and hundreds of articles and encyclopedia entries on ancient medicine, ancient philosophy, the history of science, and comparative literature.[1] He is one of the world's foremost authorities on ancient science and medicine and has contributed to the transformation of the history of the subject in the period from the fifth century B.C.

to the fifth century A.D.[2] His monumental book Herophilus: The Art of Medicine in Early Alexandria is considered the standard in the field.[3][4]

Von Staden is a graduate of Yale College and got his Ph.D.

at the University of Tübingen in He was a Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature at Yale University from to and a Professor of Classical Literature at the University of California, Berkeley in – He has also held visiting professorships at the University of Calabria in Italy, the California Institute of Technology, and the University of Texas at Austin.
